The size of the average American home has more than doubled since the 1950s, according to the National Public Radio, meaning that many families are going beyond the traditional room distributions. One space that inspires magical memories for anyone who was lucky enough to grow up with one–is a den: an entertainment/games/musical areas where kids can get away and explore their interests with friends and siblings. Picking a Theme

When building a den, why not brainstorm with children so you can include design features inspired by one them? Popular themes include sports, music, and art. The National Recreation and Park Association notes that American children enjoy only four to seven minutes of unstructured play in the Great Outdoors, yet spend almost eight hours a day glued to electronic media. If you would love your kids to experience the stress-busting, mindful experience that is interacting with nature, why not build their den outside? If they will be spending hours on end in the den, then they should have creature comforts at hand. Thus, a mini-fridge stocked with healthy snacks and drinks will ensure they don’t have to run up and down flights of steps every time they feel peckish. If they have an iPod or musical device, provide them with small Bluetooth speakers so that everyone in the room can enjoy listening to their favorite tunes. If the room is large, why not build a mini-bar with cute stools in one corner? This is the perfect spot for older kids to make their own healthy smoothies, shakes, and other refreshing drinks.

The ideal den for kids depends entirely upon the specific themes that inspire your child. Every den should have space for music, reading material, and snacks, but as far as décor is concerned, be as creative as you can, adding creative elements that will bring a smile to your child’s face.
