GW4 Crucible brings together 30 competitively selected future research leaders to explore how you can enhance your career by working with researchers in other disciplines, how your research can have greater impact, and how you can build your careers.

Over a series of three residential workshops, known as ‘labs’, you will explore working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative way, and will have the chance to connect with expert guest speakers, enhancing your professional networks and visibility.

GW4 Crucible is an excellent opportunity for you to consider new approaches to your research and its impact, to enhance your leadership potential and career development, and to network with peers and experts from across GW4 and beyond.

This year, I have decided to change it up a bit. I'm looking for ways to still have the beautifully wrapped presents under the tree but not with the usual snowman and Santa Clause wrapping. I am attempting to come up with some new ways to wrap this year that aren't quite so wasteful and I thought I would share some of these ideas that I have come accross in my attempts to be more green.

1. Wrap a gift in a beautiful scarf. It's two gifts in one.

2. Try rapping a husband or father's gift with the sports section.

3. College student at home? Why not use tupperware containers instead of boxes for their presents? (You could even send them home with leftovers in them!)

4. If you're someone who sews...there is always leftover material in your craft room...why not use it to wrap a gift?

As for the tree...my kids and I started making our own ornaments last year and will continue to do so each year. They are more beautiful than anything I could buy in a store and it gives my children a sense of pride to see their work displayed on the tree.

I will continue my quest to make my Christmas greener...and will keep you posted on all the wonderful tidbits I come accross.

Slightly different to the usual designs featured in this section, Dimpsey is a five-star luxury retreat and is described as an “all-in experience helping busy people to get some quality time together”. The glamping-style hut aims to leave its guests feeling “rejuvenated, relaxed and reconnected”.

The unique concept is run by couple Emma and Andrew Warren and is located on their small farm – shared with cows, sheep, a few chickens and a goose named George – on the Blackdown Hills in Somerset. It has been the winner of the Small Business Sunday award as well as picking up gold in the Glamping Business of the Year category at the Tourism Awards for Bath, Bristol and Somerset towards the end of 2016.

Speaking about the the concept, Emma comments: “The idea of the glamping experience is to chill out and reconnect with each other, and we have geared everything around making that happen – so from relaxing music to snuggly beds, hearing the owls hoot at night and watching the animals during the day, we’ve totally got chill out covered.”

The 18-foot long hut features a double bed, seating, kitchen area and a bathroom with a shower and flushing toilet. Designed and kitted out to feel like a luxury hotel, Emma and Andrew have ensured that all of its styles are from British designers. Other features include a hot tub, garden oven, logs for the log burner and fire pit, as well as welcome tray and eggs, bacon, butter, milk and bread for breakfast.

Despite its relatively small appearance, the owners of Dimpsey say that it always surprises people with the spaces that it offers. “We wanted the ability to have bunk beds with the top bed folding away and being unobtrusive when not in use – as well as a concealed ladder,” says Emma. The top bed fits perfectly against the wall when not in use and the ladder can be tucked away in a wall slot.

Meanwhile, the bottom bunk is a daybed and has space underneath for storage baskets, while a number of cubby holes are recessed into the wall with power sockets hidden in them. Also featured is a ‘wall bed’, which folds down out of the wall fully made. During the day the space is a bench and tables and then at night the table drops and the bed folds down.

2018/19 courses: This course is likely to run in September and March. Course dates will be published approximately 6 to 8 weeks beforehand.

Mental Health First Aid is an educational course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help a person who may be developing a mental health issue. In the same way as we learn physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill health. Mental Health First Aid was first developed in Australia in 2000 and is now internationally recognised in 23 countries.

The two-day course will be a mix of presentation, group discussions and group work activities. The key topic areas are:

• Understanding mental health
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Suicide
• Self- Harm
• Eating Disorders
• Psychosis

You will be required to attend the whole course in order to receive the Certificate of Attendance from MHFA England. You will also receive a MHFA manual that you can take away with you.

A free Line Manager's Resource can also be downloaded from MHFA England which provides guidance and advice to employers who would like to improve the way they support employees experiencing mental health issues. 

By the end of the course you will be aware of how to:

• Spot the early signs of a mental health issue
• Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health issue
• Provide help on a first aid basis
• Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
• Help stop a mental illness from getting worse
• Help someone recover faster
• Guide someone towards the right support
• Reduce the stigma of mental health issues

MHFA course:

• Two-day course
• Case studies and activities relate to mental health issues in various settings
• Although the topics are the same in both courses, this course offers the opportunity for greater exploration and discussion

MHFA Higher Education course:

• One-day course
• Case studies and activities focus specifically on Higher Education
• Although the topics are the same in both courses, they will be covered in less depth in this course 

The Effective Behaviours Framework (EBF) has nine key behavioural areas. This course will help you to develop skills and knowledge related to the EBF behavioural groups highlighted below:

• Managing self and personal skills
• Engaging with the wider context
• Working together

Please note that attending the course does not provide evidence of achieving these behaviours; you will need to demonstrate them by applying your skills and knowledge.

This course is aimed at all staff but particularly those who support students' well-being, and want to increase their knowledge, confidence and skills in dealing with mental health awareness and disorders.

The course is especially recommended for Senior Tutors, Personal Tutors and staff in Security due to the nature of their roles. It is also recommended for members of staff who have line management responsibilities and supervisors of doctoral students. 

Please note: MHFA aims to increase individual’s knowledge of and confidence in discussing mental health difficulties. As a result some of the content may be challenging and can, on occasion, trigger emotionally distressing responses in individuals. Whilst course presenters are always willing to provide support within the context of the course this will not extend beyond the two days. In cases where you feel you may be affected by the course, or if your need is for personal development or emotional support please consider these factors prior to attending the course.

How did a piece of fabric become a porcelain bowl?

TreeHugger Katherine recently asked, Could you live with fewer toiletries? She goes on to list them as “soaps, creams, and makeup” but I wondered about the word “toiletries”, which sounded archaic to me. Most of us now think of a toilet as a porcelain object, so where did toiletries come from -- or, for that matter, when did the toilet become a toilet? It’s something we didn’t cover in our history of the bathroom series.

It all evolved from the French word for cloth, toile; a small piece of cloth is a toilette. According to Merriam Webster, the 16th century English speakers spelled it toilet and meant a piece of cloth that you put over your shoulders while doing your hair or shaving, to protect your clothing.

Next, a more abstract meaning developed, as the word was applied to the whole process of washing, grooming, and dressing, especially at the beginning of the day or for a special occasion. This use of the word is often found in the constructions "at one's toilet" or "to make one's toilet."

According to the Oxford dictionaries, from whom I kind of stole the title of this post (they title theirs When did we stop wearing toilets and start using them?), it could be found protecting peoples heads as well; they quote a 1714 travel writer describing Italian women:

The ordinary citizens Wives and Daughters wear a kind of Toilet on their Heads, with a long Fringe which covers their Faces, and drives away the Flies like Horse-trappings.

Oxford goes on to explain that, in the nineteenth century, new buildings had what were called toilet rooms.

These were overtly places where you washed, but of course, though no one (except people like architects, builders, and janitors) went into the details, they included facilities for emptying the bladder and bowels. There’s no doubt of this when we read (Laws of Wisconsin, 1895): “To have at least four seat closets placed in the toilet room adjoining the assembly and at least two in the toilet room adjoining the senate.”

So they had commodes in the toilet room for the use of Wisconsin senators. But in none of the articles that I have read can I find when and why the word for the room became attached to the fixture. The Oxford people even note that they have been struggling with this for years. "The process of researching the subject has revealed a remarkable degree of reticence on the part of previous OED editors to go into detail about what exactly the room and the appliance within it are used for.“

When I was a child I giggled at my grandmother’s “toilet water” and in fact that term is still used in Britain. But generally, since the Second World War, people have associated the word toilet with the fixture to such a degree that you rarely hear the other ways it was used. It’s no longer a piece of cloth, or a thing that you do, but a porcelain thing.

Perhaps that’s why “toiletries” sounded so odd to my ears; they are things that people used when doing their toilet, and they don’t do that anymore.
