Energy Transition Pathways, Scenarios and Technologies for a Low Carbon UK Future
Professor Geoff Hammond, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath
The United Kingdom (UK) has placed itself on a transition towards a low carbon economy and society, through the imposition of a legally-binding goal aimed at reducing its ‘greenhouse gas’ (GHG) emissions by at least 80% by 2050 against a 1990 baseline. Thus, the socio-technical insights and opportunities associated with the transition towards a low-carbon future are of critical importance in many industrialised countries. Two sets of transition pathways or scenarios are therefore described that relate to the electricity sector and to industry respectively. Tools such as ‘horizon scanning’ and ‘technology assessment’ were required in order to credibly populate these scenarios. Transition pathways for the power sector were developed via an innovative collaboration between engineers, social scientists and policy analysts. They included an examination of the potential for increasing the use of low-carbon electricity for heating and transport. A second set of scenarios, and coupled technology roadmaps, were devised that reflect the transition challenges that will need to be met by industry out to 2050. Reducing industrial energy demand and improving resource efficiency could make a substantial contribution towards the UK Government’s decarbonisation goal, while simultaneously improving productivity and creating employment opportunities. These technology roadmaps exhibit quite large uncertainties, and reducing GHG emissions over the long-term will depend critically on the adoption of a small number of key technologies, alongside the ‘decarbonisation’ of electricity supply.
Geoffrey Hammond is Professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath (UK), and was founder Director of its Institute for Sustainable Energy & the Environment (I•SEE) until 2011. He is a mechanical engineer with a multidisciplinary background, including environmental protection and business management. His research interests are mainly concerned with the technology assessment of energy systems, industrial decarbonisation, and transition pathways to a low carbon future. His journal publications in the field of sustainable energy and the environment have been awarded the Dufton Silver Medal (CIBSE), the George Stephenson Prize (IMechE), and the James Watt Medal (ICE). He has given keynote and invited lectures internationally; most recently the opening keynote address at the 10th International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE2018) held in Hong Kong (China). In recent years he has advised the UK Government’s the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Government Office for Science, and their independent Committee on Climate Change. He has been Convenor of the new British Standards Institution (BSi) ‘Greenhouse Gas’ (GHG) Management Group since 2014.

Designing an Inspiring Den for Kids

The size of the average American home has more than doubled since the 1950s, according to the National Public Radio, meaning that many families are going beyond the traditional room distributions. One space that inspires magical memories for anyone who was lucky enough to grow up with one–is a den: an entertainment/games/musical areas where kids can get away and explore their interests with friends and siblings. If a home renovation is on your mind and you’d like to put extra space to good use by building an entertainment room or den, the following considerations may help you create a place where kids can wind down and take part in their favorite hobbies.
Picking a Theme
When building a den, why not brainstorm with children so you can include design features inspired by one them? Popular themes include sports, music, and art. For a sports den, for instance, you might include a basketball hoop, posters of your children’s favorite sporting stars, and sports-inspired items (think trophies, helmets, and ping-pong tables). If your child is mad about one team, in particular, paint the walls and select soft furnishings that stick close to the team’s logo and uniform. You can also find cool wall stickers featuring figures practicing different types of sport. If your kids are artistically inclined, why not ask them to create wall art for their own private space?
Taking it Outside
The National Recreation and Park Association notes that American children enjoy only four to seven minutes of unstructured play in the Great Outdoors, yet spend almost eight hours a day glued to electronic media. If you would love your kids to experience the stress-busting, mindful experience that is interacting with nature, why not build their den outside? If you have a large garden, a prefab log cabin rest space can inspire kids to interact more with nature. The interior can contain sustainable wood bunk beds, benches, and ladders, faux animal skin rugs, and shelves made from oddly-sized pieces of wood. A tree house is also a fantastic space for kids to read, listen to music, and even study when they need a little peace and quiet.
Upping the Entertainment Factor
The look and feel of your children’s den is one thing; a totally different one is how they plan to use the space. If they will be spending hours on end in the den, then they should have creature comforts at hand. Thus, a mini-fridge stocked with healthy snacks and drinks will ensure they don’t have to run up and down flights of steps every time they feel peckish. If they have an iPod or musical device, provide them with small Bluetooth speakers so that everyone in the room can enjoy listening to their favorite tunes. If the room is large, why not build a mini-bar with cute stools in one corner? This is the perfect spot for older kids to make their own healthy smoothies, shakes, and other refreshing drinks.
The ideal den for kids depends entirely upon the specific themes that inspire your child. Every den should have space for music, reading material, and snacks, but as far as décor is concerned, be as creative as you can, adding creative elements that will bring a smile to your child’s face. Enlist their help for creating artwork and purchasing decorative elements, so that the den truly feels like their very own private paradise.

What Does It Take to Stand Out?

The goal of all your marketing is to stand out from the crowd. To build a site/product that people notice, and are willing to trade money or attention for. This isn’t an easy road though. It takes a lot of work and some luck to stand out from the myriad of competitors any endeavour has.
This is where Stand Out by Dorie Clark is designed to help you. Clark starts by telling us that the experts aren’t better than us, they just found a message that resonates with readers. Stand Out is intended to help us find that message ourselves and then package it so that it resonates with our market.
One thing that Clark is not trying to do is help us become a mere celebrity, someone that has no useful content but brings only entertainment. She wants to help those that have solid intellectual content, market that content well to so that they can make an impact. Here is how she says it:
Thought leaders strive to make an impact, and that requires them to get outside the ivory tower and ensure that their message is accessible and actionable.
In her mind it all comes down to value creation.
Whether you work inside a corporation or as an entrepreneur, today’s challenge is the same: how to add so much value to others that they fight to have you on their team?
Stand Out is broken up into three sections. First Clark helps us figure out our break out idea. Second, she teaches us how we can build a following. Finally, she walks readers through the logistics of making thought leadership happen.
Finding your breakthrough idea
On the journey to finding your big idea, Clark says that good thought leaders are those people that keep asking questions others have not. Good thought leaders are people that are okay with challenging the stars quo in their industry and don’t mind some of the negative effects that may come because of this questioning.
No industry ever welcomes those who challenge its recieved wisdom, but if you’re willing to risk short-term disapprobation, you can ultimately make a substantial contribution to your field.
Clark provides us with a bunch of great questions to help us hone in on the big idea that we may become known for. She recommends that you find a slice of a niche and dominate it. Once you’ve achieved domination you can expand into the other areas that you’re interested in, but don’t spread yourself too wide to start. Remember that the more you do in a single industry or slice the more you’ll stand out, which means you’ll grow faster as a thought leader.
There are a few ways Clark says you can structure your content. One way is to provide new research in your niche. This may be talking to the non-typical person in a field, instead of always going to the regular popular interviews.
A second way is to combine all the ideas that are in your background into something new. Maybe you have extensive health care experience and can bring that knowledge to bear on a new industry that is ripe for the same processes?
Once you have your ideas ready to go, it’s time to start creating a framework you can be known for. Think of The 5 Love Languages or Getting Things Done. Both of these are frameworks and launched their creators into expert status in their fields.
With all of the content you produce, make sure it does double or triple duty. I do that with these book reviews as they become a written piece, a podcast, and then end up on YouTube. If you look for Getting Things Done on Amazon, you’ll see that the GTD content has been adapted for teens and there is a workbook and an audiobook. Don’t silo your content.
How to Build a Following
Now that you have your ideas ready to go, it’s time to build a following. According to Clark, this starts by looking around you at your colleagues and the existing network you have. You’re not looking at them to see how they can help you though, you’re going to see how you can bring value to them with the content you have.
This is a fairly safe space to start and get feedback because, at least in theory, these people like you. They’re going to sit and at least provide some feedback. If you’re heading to a networking event, don’t aim to be a business card machine gun. Go for depth instead.
Do you have enough people in your professional life who really know you? The bias in most discussions about networking is toward meeting more people, going to more cocktail parties, and trading more business cards. But sometimes depth can be as important, if not more so, than breadth.
Here you can use something my friend Philip introduced me to called trust velocity. Trust velocity is the idea that the closer you can get to shaking someone’s hand, the more they trust you. Look for these high value, face-to-face interactions as often as possible as you try to build your name as a leader in your field.
You have to move beyond those you can have direct contact with though. You will need to have some content that reaches out online so that many people can find you and interact with your ideas. Blogging is one of the easiest ways to do this because the barrier too entry is so low.
Your ideas can’t gain traction if no one knows about them; blogging is a way to reach others and get them on board.
For online networking, Clark says that you need to pick a network or two and then dive deep. Learn how to leverage it well and focus your attention on that network. Don’t scatter yourself around everywhere, focus on one that you enjoy and works for your niche.
As you build your community, always focus on the value you can provide. Make sure you’re connecting people, especially when there is no direct benefit for you. If you continue to focus on how to help others get what they want, you’ll get what you want.
How to Make Thought Leadership Happen
The book finishes up with a focus on “how-to” tie this all together and become a thought leader. It starts by reminding us that we need space without distraction to have a good idea that’s worth building in the first place. Clark also reminds us that we can’t always be giving away our content for free when she says:
Unfortunately, for many aspiring thought leaders seeking to make a living from their work, it would be easy to devote all their time to writing free online articles, helping others tremendously, and building a powerful reputation — all while starving.
I rarely write anymore for free. I started this by simply asking what the budget was for anyone that contacted me for writing on their site. It felt like a bold move when I first did it, but every single person has come back with some budget.
Clark reminds us of a few things as she ends the book. First, your income will be a mix of a bunch of things. I earn income by doing a bit of freelance writing and coding, coaching, my books, and my Patreon. Don’t get stuck on one method as the only method you’ll ever have to make money.
Second, it’s going to take a bunch of work to get where you want to be as a leader in your field. Don’t assume you can just show up one day and be a leader. I’ve been writing for 10 years to get some of the opportunities I have now. It’s going to take you a bunch of effort, but it is worth if if you stay the course.
A Word on Thought Leaders
Before I give you a recommendation I want to say a word about “thought leaders.” In fact let’s start with Dorie Clark’s thoughts on them:
Some who impugn the concept of thought leadership seem to think it’s all about self-aggrandizement. That may be true for some, but real thought leaders have an idea they want to share with the world — one they know is important enough to fight for.
The idea of a thought leader sounds pretty lame to me, but mostly because so many people that call themselves by this name have little substance to their work. It’s all bluster and $499 courses that layer on crazy marketing tactics to get users to purchase things they don’t want or need.
Don’t be a thought leader like that…please.
Should You Read Stand Out by Dorie Clark?
Overall Stand Out, had a bunch of great advice for learning to further your ideas in the market place. It didn’t feel like a text that everyone must read, but if you’re looking to get a start in marketing yourself as a leader, it’s a good place to get that start.

Cool post on Android and how you can use a different app launcher to make it a minimal phone. This is something you can’t do in the Apple ecosystem and while we used to say that Android was some terrible Wild West of security holes, that’s not really true at all.
I said recently that I’m not so jazzed about software lock in to macOS, and while it’s not a strong a feeling I still wish I could switch out to any system I want on my phone.

We’re having our first hot week here in Chilliwack which has exposed the problem in my office of getting sun all day. Starting around 9am – 7pm I’ve got sun streaming in my window which makes the office pretty hot.
The other big change this week has to do with adding more RAM to my Mac Mini. For $240 (Canadian) I was able to get 32GB of RAM. That same upgrade would have cost me $720 from Apple. By the time I got the big iFixIt toolkit and taxes were paid it cost me $350, which is still an incredible savings over what Apple charges.

I Shipped
Monday I took you along with my family to a day of paddling with Western Canoeing and Kayaking on a local lake. Cynthia and I have spent lots of time on the water in canoes and kayaks and it’s lots of fun to share this with our kids.

1. Ben Brooks on getting started with an iPad
Ben has a good guide on using an iPad Pro as your only computer. I’ve been iPad first for a while now and have General;y been very happy.
He talks about not using Dropbox or Google Drive with an iPad Pro and I can concur, mostly. The problem with iCloud is that if you have a Mac around as a server like I do then you may be limited on how much you can actually store in there.
Unlike Dropbox iCloud doesn’t allow any selective sync on your Mac. So I have a 512GB which means I can only store 512GB of files on iCloud. That may seem like a lot, but I’m doing more and more video stuff so it’s really not that much. iCloud needs offline only folders on macOS.
The second reason that Dropbox seems to be a poor choice is that it seems to eat your storage. I have had an 800gb System storage report in iOS, and I’m not the only one to have this problem. Where many others found that they had to wipe their iPad a recent update to iOS showed me that Dropbox had 1.4TB of storage on my device.
No there is no iOS device that has that much storage but it at least let me know that Dropbox was likely the problem to an overflowing system storage number. Sure enough removing Dropbox from my iPad took me from 900GB used to 100GB used.
If you have a huge system storage report in iOS and use Dropbox, remove it and see what happens.
2. Justin Jackson says it’s better to wait
I liked this post from Justin. I keep a list of cool ideas in my Bullet Journal and only work on ones that have been vetted a few times. They’ve moved journals, and been looked at and after months of still itching about it.

Many companies, and freelancers, spend their entire lives “muddling through” and their marriages pay the price. That’s what breaks my heart and what I want to help.

Low-cost funerals are now in demand and, as Joan discovers, there are many ways of keeping the cost down. She and her panel discuss the different elements of a funeral to reveal where the money goes, and how you can make savings. Many people today are choosing to do away with the ‘frills’, such as the hearse, limousines and pall bearers, and focussing on the essentials - the coffin, cremation or burial, and the service.
While some can afford a low-cost funeral, an increasing number cannot. The state-funded public health funerals, or ‘paupers funerals’ as they were once called, are on the rise. But securing one from your local authority isn’t always easy. Joan asks why these funerals can be so hard to access, when someone is in genuine need, and where to seek help.
